The EU's Plan To Kill DeFi

Coin Bureau

Resumen

The European Union is currently reviewing its cryptocurrency regulations, specifically looking to reclassify decentralized finance (DeFi) activities under the strict framework designed for traditional banks and stock exchanges, known as MiFID II. While MiCA was intended to provide a bespoke regime for digital assets, this new regulatory expansion threatens to make many permissionless protocols and staking services legally impossible to offer in Europe. The analysis highlights that this potential move favors established institutional players, like banks and large brokers, who can afford the heavy compliance costs, effectively squeezing out crypto-native innovators and potentially forcing them to relocate outside of the EU.
